Probably the closest thing to a LinkedIn post 'going viral' I will ever get!
CO2 Offsets For Sale!
I promise to protect and not to cut down this amazing two hundred year old oak tree in my garden for say 10 tonnes of carbon offsets at £20 per tonne of CO2.
Sounds bonkers? But this is exactly what many so called ‘high quality’ offset projects are doing. Identify some trees (better still a large forest), say that the trees are at threat of being cut down, offer to protect them, and then flog a load of carbon credits in the project.
What makes it bizarre is that as owner of the tree I NEVER plan to cut it down - but just the threat that I could is sufficient to set up a scheme. All I need to do is to find an organisation to certify my project (I can pay them with my credits) and off I go… Two hundred quid anyone? Seriously, you could not make it up.
