In 2006, following the documentary of Al Gore’s presentation ‘An inconvenient truth’, I caught what was probably the first wave of travel industry interest in sustainability.
It was a shock to realise the impact that air travel - and therefore business travel - must be having on the environment.
In September 2006, I registered the domain TravelCarbon.com and started up a simple portal containing links to reports, articles, and presentations surrounding the environmental cost of business travel.
In 2008, the global financial crisis put a stop to everything - literally no one was interested in sustainability after that.
It stayed this way for nearly a decade until Greta Thunberg and her protest at the Swedish parliament (August 2018) stirred a second wave of global interest in the environment.
In 2019 I was researching carbon calculators and working on a travel demand model when I came across Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). I was hooked! 4 years later, including 3 years consulting with Neste, the worlds' largest producer, I have decided to focus my consulting activity exclusively on SAF and to helping create a fossil-free future for business travel.
In February the lights go on again at TravelCarbon.com
